The Kalevala, first published in 1835, has been translated into at least 62 languages and has been published 267 times (that we know of). Why has the Kalevala been and is still being translated into new languages and new editions? Who are the translators, what motivates them and how can the trochaic tetrameter even be translated from one language to another? For what kind of readers have the translations been published?

Kalevala Around the World Website

The Kalevala Around the World website contains over 100 articles on the Kalevala translations, translators and the cultural history of Kalevala translations. To celebrate the European Heritage Label awarded to the Kalevala as a Living Epic, we have made the site also available for international readers, in English.
